Royal Shakespeare Theatre

2 minutes on foot

The RSC main house and the Swan sit side by side on the waterfront. We hold a small allocation of tickets for residents and can usually find seats even on short notice — ask at reception.

Shakespeare's Birthplace

7 minutes on foot

The half-timbered house on Henley Street where Shakespeare was born in 1564, restored and run by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Go early; the queue builds after eleven.

Holy Trinity Church

9 minutes on foot

Shakespeare was baptised and is buried here, in a riverside churchyard of limes and yews. Evensong on Sunday is open to all and worth the walk.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

25 minutes on foot

The thatched farmhouse in Shottery where Shakespeare courted Anne Hathaway, with an orchard and willow cabin. A pleasant walk across the fields, or five minutes by taxi.

Warwick Castle

20 minutes by car

A thousand years of fortification, with the trebuchet firing twice daily in season. Buy online the night before — it is noticeably cheaper than at the gate.

Stratford Canal Basin

5 minutes on foot

Where the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal meets the river. Narrowboats turn in the basin all summer and the towpath walk to Wilmcote makes an easy half day.

The Northern Cotswolds

30 minutes by car

Chipping Campden, Broadway and the honey-coloured villages of the north Cotswold escarpment. Reception keeps a driving route that avoids the coach traffic.
